Work in progress
PhD study: If you are interested in working with me at a PhD level in the areas listed above, please contact me. Currently, I am looking for PhD candidates in:

1. Container terminal operations: A container terminal is a very complex system with highly dynamic interactions between the various processes (handling, transportation, the storage yard, etc). The decisions pertaining to containers have to be made on their path through the terminals, involving a wide range of activities, for example, arrival of ships, unloading and loading of ships, quayside transport, storage and stacking logistics, landside transport, etc. Driven by huge growth rates on major maritime container routes, the competition between container ports has considerably increased. Not only does the handling capacity of terminals worldwide become larger and larger, but also significant gains in productivity have to be achieved through advanced terminal layout, more efficient IT support, improved logistics control software systems. Mathematical modelling of the container terminal operations is therefore a subject of interests for a PhD. A strong mathematics background and programming skill will be required.

2. Yield management and pricing optimization in supermarket: Yield management, also known as revenue management, is the process of understanding, anticipating and influencing consumer behaviour in order to maximize revenue from a fixed, perishable resource. Yield management was originally developed in the airline industry for controlling the price of seats. One area in which revenue management and pricing optimization is becoming more predominated is in the supermarket sector. Recent research finds that almost half of U.S. supermarket purchases are sold on promotion. The optimization of grocery price is therefore a subject of interest for a PhD, with close links to supermarkets. A strong mathematics background and programming skill will be required.
